New Mexico Has Some Great GOP Candidates!

STEVE PEARCE WINS SENATE NOMINATION

From The Pink Flamingo

Everyone here in New Mexico is acting like a grown-up when it comes to Steve Pearce’s slight win over Heather Wilson for the GOP nomination to fill legendary Pete Domenici’s Senate seat. He was immediately endorsed by the outgoing Senator and by his opponent. Around the same time, Tom Udall, the Democratic nominee for Senate quickly endorsed Barack Obama.

Already Pearce is being castigated:
“…Special-interest groups were quick to strike at Pearce and Udall today. The liberal Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund, which has been running TV and radio ads attacking Wilson and Pearce for months, will now focus on Pearce’s environmental record. “Pearce is absolutely irredeemable. He never votes to protect the environment if big oil and other special interests want something else. He is an anti-environmental extremist in the true sense of the phrase,” Rodger Schlickeisen, president of the group, said in a news release. Meanwhile, the conservative Club for Growth, which spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to run TV ads attacking Wilson in the primary, sent out a news release praising Pearce and attacking Udall as “an inveterate liberal who has voted for tax increases and government spending.” “Club for Growth members are proud to have supported an economic conservative like Steve Pearce in his primary win,” President Pat Toomey said. “… The general election will be competitive, but we are confident that New Mexicans will rally to Steve Pearce when they hear about his record of fighting for the prosperity, jobs and opportunity that come from free enterprise.”…”

Currently Udall has a 2 to 1 lead over Pearce in the polls. Udall is extremely well funded and has the NM Dem (corrupt) machine behind him. Pearce is not a pauper and has a fairly decent war chest. According to Heather Wilson, Pearce may just give Udall a run for the money since he’s never really had actual competition in any of his previous races. I’m surprised Udall is not waiting to run for Governor.

TINSLEY GETS 2ND DISTRICT NOD

Congrats go to Ed Tinsley for his 2nd District win.
“…“We look forward to an invigorated general election,” Tinsley said. “I think they’re both great gentlemen and I think they both stand for their party issues. I just think there will be distinct differences.”Tinsley praised some of his primary opponents, saying Newman “ran a great race” and Sowards “really exceeded expectations.” Tinsley said he considered Dunn the frontrunner through most of the race, but stayed consistently on Dunn’s heels and remained patient. And he said he sympathizes with his opponents because he’s been in their shoes. Tinsley lost the Republican 2nd District primary in 2002. “We’re excited about what’s occurred tonight and I want to reiterate the fantastic people that I’ve run with and against during this campaign,” Tinsley said. “They are champion folks.” Newman said he was “thankful to be a part of the process.” “Ed did a good job and ended up with a win tonight,” he said. “We’re very pleased with our performance and what we’ve done in a short time.”

Don't Hold Your Breath for NM Results

If were living under some sort of fantasy that we would have results for New Mexico any time in the near future, go to bed and deal with it. The last I heard, a rental truck (you read it right) in Dona Ana county is broken down somewhere in no person's land. There's no way we're going to get NM 2nd District results, or the Pearce/Wilson results tonight.

Face it, New Mexico is ALWAYS the very last state to finally certify their results. I have a theory about that. New Mexico politics are so corrupt, the outcome has been decided ahead of time. Recounts must continue until enough votes have been either found or discarded in order to secure those pre-arranged results.

Steve Pearce is slaughtering Heather Wilson last time I looked. The Secretary of State's site is slowly getting results. It is nearly midnight as I write this. The polls closed at 7PM. So far only 6 counties have forwarded their results. Lincoln County is one of the few were the count is completed. But then, Lincoln is the most Republican county in the state.

On the positive side, it looks like we may end up with a half way decent 2nd District Congressional Candidate. My friend Carrie Spencer won her primary for probate judge.

UPDATE: The Pearce/Wilson race is within 1.5% points. There are only 6 counties responding so no big deal. If the numbers I'm seeing are any indication, who ever wins is going to go down in flames to Tom Udall the Democrat, in November. That is - if they ever get the blasted votes counted!

Congress is broken. I’d like to help fix it.

My name is Grant Bosse, and I’m running for Congress to return Congress to its core responsibilities; a strong national defense, secure borders, and an economy free from over-taxation, unfunded mandates, and over-regulation.

As a local reporter, a State House staffer, and an aide to Senator John Sununu, I’ve seen government work well, and seen the price we all pay when it doesn’t. I’ve seen a Republican Congress lose its way, and a Democratic Congress adopt the same bad habit, along with some new ones of its own.

It’s time we returned Congress to its true priorities, and returned power back to individuals and families. I’ll hope you will join me.

-Grant Bosse

Pennsylvania: Hart, Gilhooley, Kats, Manion

On my "Pennsylvania" blog (http://pennsylvaniaforjohnmccain.blogspot.com) I write mainly about the many fascinating congressional races this year in the Keystone State. Make no mistake, Pennsylvania will be a major battleground, both in the presidential race and in the "down-ballot" contests.

In my own district, the 4th (west and north of Pittsburgh), former congresswoman Melissa Hart is fighting to regain her seat against Democrat Jason Altmire. He has the money but she has the momentum and the drive to win. Altmire is one of those "Blue Dog Democrats" (supposed conservatives) who votes liberal on all key issues. In the last election, he referred to John Murtha as "his campaign manager." Melissa Hart is a woman of great character and leadership abilities; I count her as a friend and an inspiration.

In the 17th District (Harrisburg, Hershey, Lebanon areas), Democrat Tim Holden, now in a thoroughly undistinguished 8th term, is facing a real Republican street-fighter. She's Toni Gilhooley, a 25-year-veteran of the Pennsylvania State Police. Toni is an underdog, but she has going for her the fact that McCain should carry this district by nearly 50,000 votes. Combined with her own fierce campaigning tactics, McCain might just help carry Mrs. Gilhooley to victory. This race is an "upset special." It's one that's personally important to me because I think the world of Toni.

In the 13th District (Montgomery County and Northeast Philly), the incumbent Democrat is Allyson Schwartz, a old-style programmatic liberal. Schwartz's opponent is Marina Kats, who emigrated to the U.S. many years ago from Russia. Marina is a successful lawyer, an entrepreneur and a patriot -- all qualities her opponent frankly lacks. As with the previous two races, this one is winnable if Marina campaigns tirelessly and effectively, which I fully expect her to do.

In the 8th District (Bucks County), the incumbent is Patrick Murphy, who won a very narrow victory in 2006. His opponent is 30-year-Marine veteran and businessman Tom Manion. One emotional factor underlying this contest is that Manion's son, Travis, a U.S. Naval Academy graduate, was killed-in-action in Iraq. Cong. Murphy, an advocate of cutting-and-running was an early advocate of Barack Obama, but Hillary Clinton won the district by a huge margin. If Manion can attract a good chunk of those Hillary supporters, he could surprise the pundits and pull off a victory.

Hart, Gilhooley, Kats, and Manion: These aren't the only congressional races in Pennsylvania, but they are four important ones. A major key to unseating a Democrat incumbent is to make the decision to do everything necessary to win. The four candidates I've mentioned have made that decision. (I write about these four races and others on my Pennsylvania blog.)
