The first day of the 2008 Republican National Convention opened up with a joint address by First Lady Laura Bush and Cindy McCain. In their respective addresses, they called upon the Nation to “put country first” and pray for the people living in the Gulf Coast.
“Our first priority for today and in the coming days is to ensure the safety and well-being of those living in the Gulf Coast Region,” said the First Lady. She went on to say, “When such events occur, we are reminded that first, we are all Americans — and that our shared American ideals will always transcend political parties and partisanship.”
Cindy McCain had this to say, “As John has been saying for the last several days, this is a time when we take off our Republican hats and put on our American hats.”
Because of the hurricane, all of the major speakers for Monday were canceled. Rumor has it that George Bush will do a televised address on Tuesday.
Check this blog and my other blog for coverage of the convention all week long!
